new labor code
There is going to be a big change regarding workers in the country. The Central Government is taking rapid steps towards implementing the new Labor Code from April 1, 2026. The Ministry of Labor and Employment has started the process of finalizing the rules of all four labor codes. Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said that these rules will soon be pre-published, so that the public can give their opinion within 45 days. After this, the new system will be implemented by notifying them.
Many big changes in the lives of employees
The objective of the new Labor Code is to provide more security, flexibility and better facilities to the workers in the country. Many important changes have been included in the new rules, from working hours to social security.
New system of working hours and overtime
Even now 8 hours of work is fixed in a day, but a provision of 48 hours in a week has been made. This means that companies can make their employees work more hours for 4 days and can also give them 3 days leave. A clear arrangement has also been made for overtime, so that the employees can get full compensation for their extra hard work. This change will also give employees an opportunity to improve flexibility and work life balance.
Appointment letter and right to equal pay
According to the new rules, it will now be mandatory to give appointment letter to every employee. This will not only clarify the job conditions but will also increase job security. Apart from this, the provision of ‘equal pay for equal work’ has also been strengthened, so that both men and women will get equal pay for equal role.

Free health checkup for 40+ employees
For the first time, the government has added the rule of free health checkup for employees aged 40 years and above. This step is being considered a major improvement in the direction of improving the health and safety of workers.
Women have freedom to work in all shifts
In the new labor code, there is a provision to give equal opportunity to women to work in any shift whether night or day. This will open new avenues of employment for women and increase their participation in various fields.
The scope of social security will increase
The government aims to bring 100 crore people under the ambit of social security by March 2026. At present this number is around 94 crores. Mandaviya said that in 2015, only 19% workers were covered under social security, but by 2025 this has increased to more than 64%.
Center and states will have to implement the law together
Since labor law is a subject of the ‘Concurrent List’, both the Center and the states will have to notify rules at their respective levels to implement the new code. Only then will this new labor system be implemented simultaneously in the entire country. The new Labor Code is considered to be the biggest reform that will change the way of working in the country. This will provide uniformity in rules to the companies and more security and better facilities to the employees.
