New Janeu: Why is a new janeu worn on Shravan Purnima? Know what is the reason

Janeu Sanskar

Janeu, called Yajnopavit, is considered a sacred thread in Hinduism which is worn by men. It is worn during Upanayana rites. From a religious point of view, it is considered an important ritual which is a symbol of a person entering the religious life. Janeu rites are usually performed between the ages of 8 and 16 years. Today is Sawan Purnima on August 9 and on this day the men of the Brahmin community change their old janeu and wear new janeu. It is said that this tradition has been going on since the time of sages and sages. Let’s have the reason for this.

Changing on Sawan Purnima is auspicious

According to religious belief, Janeu is usually auspicious to change the day of Shravan Purnima i.e. Rakshabandhan, but it can be converted into any auspicious day and auspicious time. If a thread of janeu breaks or becomes more than 6 months old, it should be changed.

Rakshabandhan is celebrated on Sawan Purnima and hence this day is also known as ‘Shravani Upakarma’. This is the day from religious terms when in ancient times, sages and sages used to tell their disciples about the Vedas and get them wearing new janeu. It is said that this tradition is followed since then.

Some of the rules for changing janeu are as follows:-

Shravan Purnima:- The day of Rakshabandhan is considered to be the most auspicious for changing Janeu.

Auspicious time:- You can change janeu in any auspicious day and auspicious time.

Broken thread:- If a thread of Janeu breaks, then it should be replaced.

6 months old:- If Janeu becomes more than 6 months old, it should be replaced.

On being impure:- If Janeu becomes impure for any reason, it should be replaced.

Do not wear at night:- Wearing a new janeu at night is forbidden, except when it is necessary to change immediately.

What to do with old janeu?

If accidentally breaks down or becomes impure for any reason, then after bathing, wearing a mantra of wearing Gayatri Mantra or Janeu, one should wear a new yajnopavit and remove the old janeu in the opposite direction.
