New impetus to eco-tourism in Uttar Pradesh, preparation for major changes in Dudhwa and Katarniaghat

To promote eco-tourism in Uttar Pradesh, big plans have been decided to develop Dudhwa National Park, Katarniaghat River Safari, Tharu Culture and Tharu-Thali. These initiatives will provide employment to local communities and a new direction to tourism.

The breeze of the forest, the waves of the river and the smell of tribal culture… Uttar Pradesh government is now preparing to give this complete experience to the tourism lovers with a new identity. From the serene valleys of Dudhwa to the river safari of Katarniaghat, the state government has expedited the process of clearing several big proposals to take eco-tourism to a new level. The aim of these schemes is not only to increase tourism but also to strengthen the cultural heritage and livelihood of the local tribes.

The capacity of boat safari in Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary will be doubled.

Boat safari on the Gerua River is very popular in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary adjacent to the Nepal border. At present two boats are operating here, but in view of the increasing demand, the Eco Tourism Board has prepared a proposal to add two more eco-friendly boats. With the arrival of new boats, the number of tourists will increase and they will get a better experience of the beautiful view of the forest and the river.

Promotion of ‘Anubhav-Tharu Culture’ scheme in Dudhwa

Eco Tourism Development Board has proposed ‘Experience – Tharu Culture’ scheme to give global recognition to the unique culture, traditions and food of the Tharu tribe. Under this:

  • Cultural tour in the villages of Tharu tribe
  • promote traditional cuisine
  • Display platform for local arts and crafts
  • Live cultural experience for tourists

This scheme will provide new employment and income opportunities to the Tharu tribe. Besides, tourists will also get a unique folk-cultural experience.

Tharu-thali will be promoted on a large scale

The board has instructed hotel, resort and home-stay operators to compulsorily include ‘Tharu-thali’ in their menu. This thali is made from the traditional dishes of the Tharu community, in which local grains, herbs and natural spices are specially used.

  • Extensive publicity campaign by Tourism Department

Proposed redevelopment of Chandan Chowki Shilpgram

Chandan Chowki Shilpgram situated in Dudhwa area, which has been closed for a long time, has been planned to be redeveloped and revived as a center of tribal art and culture. Facilities offered here:

  • craft exhibitions
  • Cultural programme
  • workshops
  • Live demonstration of tribal handicrafts

This center can be operated by the Tourism Department or Eco Tourism Board under private investment model.

State government’s strategy will get strength

From all these projects:

  • Dudhwa and Katarniaghat areas will become major eco-tourism hubs of the country.
  • Local communities will be economically empowered
  • Environmental protection will get a new direction
  • Uttar Pradesh tourism industry will get a new identity at the global level

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath plans to make Uttar Pradesh among the biggest eco-tourism hubs of the country, and these proposals are important steps in that direction.
