GST Council Food Tax Changes: The GST Council has changed the tax structure to two slabs instead of four. From September 22, many foods will be cheaper, while soft drinks and sweet products will be expensive. This will provide relief to the middle class.
Who is the father of GST?
Dr. Vijay Kelkar, the father of GST in India, is considered, but the idea was first introduced by Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2000.
GST Revised Food List 2025: A new structure of new Gounds and Services Tax is going to be implemented. The GST Council has made a major change in tax slabs on 3 September, under which many things will be cheap and some one thing will be expensive. Now only two slabs (5, 12, 18 and 28 percent) will be only 5% and 18% instead of four slabs (5, 12, 18 and 28 percent). The new structure will be applicable from 22 September 2025. Under this, many foods will be cheap, which will provide great relief to middle class families. So let us know which things coming in the kitchen will be cheap and which will be expensive.
What will be cheaper?
These things will come on zero tax (currently there is 5% tax on these things.)
- Chapati and paratha- Now there will be no tax on them. Earlier 5 percent tax was on them.
- Milk, chenna, cheese, pizza bread, khakhara-now tax zero
Things will come on 5% tax (currently 18% tax.)
- Butter, ghee
- Dry nuts
- Condensed milk
- Sausage and Meat
- Jam, jelly
- Tender coconut water
- Salty
- Fruit juice and pulp
- Milk drinks
- 20 liter packed water bottles
- Ice cream, pastry, biscuits
- Cornflex and Serials
- Soya milk drinks, cheese and other fats

What will be expensive?
If you like soft drinks or sweet things, then your pocket will cost more.
- Caronated Beverages (Soft drinks like Coca -Cola, Pepsi) – Now 40% tax (currently 28%.)
- Caffeine drinks- now 40% tax (first 28%)
- Other non-alcoholic beverages- now 40% tax (currently 18%.)
- All things with sugar or flavor-now 40% tax (currently 28%.)
New GST on popcorn
There was a lot of debate about popcorn’s tax category earlier. Now it has been made simplified-
Namkeen or spicy popcorn (open or packaged) will be taxed at 5%.
Creamle popcorn will be charged 18% tax. The reason behind this is the sugar used in it.
Overall, the change in GST slab for middle class has brought relief, while taxes have been increased on harmful things for health.
