Senior IPS officer Satish Golcha officially took charge as the 26th Commissioner of Delhi Police on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Delhi Police Headquarters.
The 1992-batch officer from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre steps into the role following an unusually brief tenure by his predecessor, S B K Singh, who served for just 21 days.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued Golcha’s appointment order on Thursday, a move that has drawn attention due to its timing. The announcement came a day after an attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing at her Civil Lines office on Wednesday. Authorities have emphasized that Golcha’s appointment is unrelated to the incident, dispelling speculations of a reactive posting.
Golcha, known for his tough and no-nonsense approach to policing, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as the special commissioner of police (law and order) and played a pivotal role in managing the volatile situation during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. His decisive actions and ability to maintain order under pressure earned him a reputation as a reliable and resolute officer. Golcha is expected to serve as Delhi Police Commissioner until April 2027, giving him a substantial tenure to address the capital’s complex security challenges.
His predecessor, S B K Singh, a 1988-batch IPS officer, holds the record for the shortest stint as Delhi Police chief. Singh assumed the role on August 1, 2025, following the retirement of Sanjay Arora. The rapid transition has sparked discussions about the stability of leadership within the Delhi Police, a force tasked with maintaining law and order in one of India’s most dynamic and challenging urban environments.
Golcha’s appointment comes at a critical time for Delhi, with rising concerns about public safety and law enforcement in the capital. His leadership will be closely watched as he navigates issues ranging from crime control to managing public unrest in a politically charged city. With his proven track record, many are hopeful that Golcha will bring stability and innovation to the Delhi Police.
