Pucovski, once regarded as one of Australia’s most promising young batsmen, was forced to retire from cricket in April 2025 at the age of 27 following 13 documented concussions.
Pucovski filed a lawsuit against Brighton Grammar School in the Victorian Supreme Court on Tuesday. His statement of claim alleges that the school failed to provide adequate care after he suffered a concussion during a football training session in 2014.
The incident occurred when Pucovski was accidentally kneed in the head during football practice, leaving him unconscious. He returned to training too soon after the incident and subsequently experienced concussion-related symptoms for several months.
His lawyers have alleged that the 2014 injury resulted in a traumatic brain injury, vision problems and recurring migraines. They have also linked the injury to mental health difficulties, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety.
Speaking at a Lord’s Taverners event earlier this year, Pucovski recalled the incident and described its lasting impact on his life.
He said he was taken to the sidelines after being knocked unconscious but was then asked whether he wanted to continue training. He agreed and returned to the session, despite the injury.
Pucovski said the incident ultimately marked a major turning point in his life, claiming he had never felt the same afterward and struggled to return to his previous level of activity.
The talented opening batsman eventually retired from all forms of cricket on medical advice from experts associated with Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria.
Pucovski represented Australia in one Test, making his international debut against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January 2021. He scored a half-century in the first innings.
At first-class level, Pucovski played 35 matches and scored 2,350 runs at an average of 45.19. His highest score was an unbeaten 255.
