New Delhi: Netflix has begun rolling out a major update to its mobile app, introducing a redesigned interface and a new feature aimed at improving content discovery. This comes on the heels of the company’s recent overhaul of its smart TV interface and now extends to mobile users. The new app has already begun to roll out in markets such as India, US, UK, and Australia and will be available to all users within months.
The most notable addition to this update is a vertical video stream known as “Clips”, which will offer users a taste of content. First announced at Netflix’s last quarterly earnings, the new tool is designed to make scrolling more interactive and efficient, particularly for mobile users who like watching short videos.
New ‘Clips’ feature brings vertical video discovery
The new Clips feature enables users to browse short, vertical video clips from films, shows and specials on Netflix. They are tailored to individual tastes, making it easier for users to choose a show or movie.
Netflix claims this is a more accurate representation of the content than trailers and written descriptions. Viewers can also easily add titles to their “My List” from the Clips feed, allowing them to save content for viewing later.
The initiative is similar to short-form video sharing platforms such as Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. Netflix says Clips aims to provide a “mobile-native” discovery experience.
Easy sharing and quick access to content
Sharing is another feature of Clips. Clips can be shared through other social networks like WhatsApp and Instagram, or even directly to Instagram Stories from the app.
What’s more, each clip has a “see more” button that takes users directly to the show or movie page. This makes it easier for users to transition from discovery to viewing.
Refreshed design inspired by modern UI trends
Aside from the introduction of Clips, Netflix has also made design upgrades. The addition of a bottom menu bar includes a Clips option, and the top menu bar has been made more accessible.
The new menu includes tabs such as Shows, Movies, New & Hot, and Categories. The look and feel seems to be inspired by the latest designs from Apple, emphasising simplicity and usability.
Netflix stated that the redesign aims to bring “what users care about front and center,” combining streamlined navigation with a mobile-first, visually engaging experience.
