Nepal has rolled out a new online system to keep better records of foreign travellers entering the country. It is called the Foreign Nationals Management Information System, or FNMIS, and it is now live.
The goal is simple. Nepal wants clearer information about where foreign nationals stay and what they do during their visit.
What Is FNMIS and Why Does It Matter
FNMIS is an online database managed by Nepal’s Department of Immigration. It records basic details of foreign nationals, including passport and visa information, along with stay details.
Travellers can register through the Department of Immigration’s official mobile app. In some cases, hotels or service providers may also help complete the registration.
For visitors, this means one more compliance step. For Nepal, it means tighter monitoring of foreign stays across the country.
Who Needs to Register Right Now
The system is being rolled out in stages.
Phase 1 is already active: This applies to foreign nationals staying in star-rated hotels inside the Kathmandu Valley.
Travellers are expected to register when they arrive in Nepal. If they do not, the hotel must ensure registration is completed at check-in.
What Changes From March 1, 2026
Phase 2 starts on March 1, 2026: From this date, the system expands nationwide and covers:
- All-star-rated hotels
- Airlines
- Travel companies
- Money exchange services
Foreign nationals using any of these services will need to be registered in the FNMIS system.
More Places Will Be Added Later
Nepal plans to expand the system further in future phases. Eventually, it will include:
- All hotels and guest houses
- Other public and private institutions
This means registration will become routine for most foreign travellers, regardless of where they stay.
Important Advice for Foreign Travellers
With stricter tracking in place, Nepal is also tightening enforcement of visa rules.
Foreign nationals should only take part in activities allowed under their visa type. Working, volunteering, or engaging in business without the right visa can lead to penalties or fines.
The message from authorities is clear. Follow your visa conditions closely and make sure your stay details are properly registered.
What This Means for Your Trip to Nepal
For most travellers, FNMIS will feel like a background process handled by hotels or service providers. Still, it is wise to stay informed.
If you are visiting Nepal in 2026 or later, expect more formal checks and digital records. Carry accurate documents, register when required, and keep your activities aligned with your visa.
It is a small step that helps avoid problems during an otherwise smooth journey.
