Why Gen Z is protesting in Nepal?
The unrest in Nepal has intensified over the past week. At least 19 people have died during widespread demonstrations, which began after the government ordered the shutdown of popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Reddit, and X. Authorities had demanded that all users register with the communication and information technology ministry by August 28, sparking anger among citizens.
Although the ban on social media was lifted on Monday night, the protests turned more violent on Tuesday. Demonstrators set fire to key government buildings, including the Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Prime Minister’s residence and the President’s office. Political party offices and homes of senior leaders were also targeted. Former prime minister Jhalanath Khanal’s house was torched, and his wife later succumbed to burn injuries.
In response to the escalating situation, the Nepal Army announced that it had taken control of national security. Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed for peace, writing on X: “The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us.”
