Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra praised the performance of the Indian contingent at the U-20 World Athletics Championships. The Gold Medalist congratulated the young athletes for their efforts and experience on the international stage.
Chopra took to social media to extend his wishes to the Indian athletes after the conclusion of the championships.
The Olympic and World Champion highlighted that the young athletes returned home with more than just medals, gaining valuable exposure and experience by competing against some of the best athletes from around the world.
“Congratulations to the entire Indian contingent at the U-20 World Athletics Championships, who gave their best for the country and returned not just with medals, but so much of exposure and experience of competing with international athletes. Keep building on this momentum!,” Chopra wrote.
Indian contingent finished the championships with three medals. This matched the country’s overall medal tally from both the 2021 and 2022 editions.
Ashish Yadav secured a silver medal in the men’s javelin throw. Basant Kumar Meghwal then added another silver in the men’s high jump, before Shahnavaz Khan completed India’s medal haul with a bronze in the men’s long jump.
The campaign ended with disappointment for national senior record holder Pooja Singh, who finished seventh in the women’s high jump final.
The 19-year-old managed to clear 1.84m, well below her national senior record of 1.93m. Singh was unable to clear 1.87m despite three attempts and eventually finished outside the medal positions.
Despite Pooja Singh’s result, India will surely be happy with there performance after grabbing three medals. Several promising performances from its next generation of athletes will be expected in the coming years.
Chopra’s message was dedicated to importance of the experience gained by the young Indian contingent, with the country’s leading athletics star urging the athletes to build on their international exposure and continue their growth.
