8th day of navratri katha: Today i.e. 30 September is the eighth day of Sharadiya Navratri, which is also known as Ashtami or Mahashtami. This date is considered to be of special importance in Navratri, because on this day people organize a girl’s worship and the fast of Navratri is considered incomplete without a girl worship. On the 8th day of Navratri i.e. Ashtami, the mother Mahagauri is worshiped. Mahagauri Mata is the eighth form of Goddess Durga, who is considered calm, compassionate and affectionate goddess. The vehicle of Mata Mahagauri is a bull, hence she is also called ‘Vrisharuda’. It is believed that mother Gauri blesses the devotees and relieves all her problems. Story of Mahagauri Mata
According to mythology, Goddess Parvati started remembering the events of her previous birth at the age of eight, when she was Goddess Sati and had died. After the memory of the previous birth, he accepted Lord Shiva as her husband and decided to do harsh penance in this birth as well. Mata Parvati did disinterested and nirjala penance for years, due to which her body turned black.
Lord Shiva was very happy to see such penance of Mother Parvati and he promised to accept Mother Parvati as his wife. Then Lord Shiva washed the body of the mother with the holy water of the Ganges and after taking a bath with Ganga water, his body became stunning and Gaur Varna. After this bath, Mata Parvati became Kantiya and Tejashwi and called Mahagauri.

This story of Mahagauri Mata is a symbol of the renunciation and penance of the Goddess. This story shows that devotees who do penance with a true heart, are pleased with the deities and fulfill their wishes.
