How did this tradition start?
According to the prevailing stories, ‘Once some prostitutes were going to bathe in the Ganges river. At the same time, a leprosy patient was sitting on the ghat, who was asking for help from the people to take bath in the Ganges. Nobody paid attention to his words, but the prostitutes made that leprosy patient a bath in the Ganges. He was none other than a leprosy, but Mahadev himself. In his true form, Mahadev asked the prostitutes to ask for a boon. The prostitutes then said that ‘the idols of the Goddess should not be constructed without the soil of our courtyard.’ Mahadev gave him this boon. Since then, this tradition has been going on which continues even today.

Apart from the popular story, there is another reason for this tradition. According to him, when a person enters the prostitute’s house, he leaves the fruit of all his good deeds. Due to these virtuous deeds, the soil of the Angam of the prostitute is considered very sacred. Therefore, the soil of prostitutes is specially used to make Devi Devi statues.
