Nataraja has Damru in his right hand, which is a symbol of sound. He holds fire in his left hand, which is a symbol of power. The third hand of Nataraja is in Abhaya Mudra and the fourth hand is in Nritya Mudra. Nataraja has one foot in the air and a dwarf demon is seen below the other foot.

According to religious texts, the name of the demon who is under the feet of Nataraja is Apsmar. In South India it is known as Mulayaka. It is believed that Epilepsy had many unique powers due to which it considered others inferior to itself and could influence the intelligence of others. Due to which even good people started behaving badly.
Why did Nataraja press under the feet?
