Napoli Defeats Atalanta 3-1 As David Neres Scores Two Goals In Palladino’s First Match

David Neres scored twice in the first half, leading Napoli to a 3-1 victory over Atalanta. This win temporarily placed Napoli at the top of Serie A. Antonio Conte’s team is now one point ahead of Inter, who can regain the lead with a win against AC Milan in the upcoming Derby della Madonnina.

Neres opened the scoring 17 minutes into the match. He capitalised on Rasmus Hojlund’s flick, sprinting forward to slot a low shot into the bottom left corner. The Brazilian extended Napoli’s lead in the 38th minute, expertly finishing into the far corner from Scott McTominay’s pass.

Just before half-time, Noa Lang added a third goal for Napoli. His header was caught by Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi but crossed the line. Atalanta managed to score seven minutes after the break through Gianluca Scamacca, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner.

Despite this goal sparking hopes of a comeback for Atalanta, it remained only a consolation. Late in the game, Charles De Ketelaere nearly scored again for Napoli with a powerful shot that skimmed the crossbar. Vanja Milinkovic-Savic made crucial saves to deny Ademola Lookman and secure Napoli’s lead.

Conte fielded his youngest starting lineup of the season, which proved effective as Napoli led by three goals at halftime. This was their first such lead since October 2022 against Sassuolo. For Atalanta, it was their first time trailing by three goals at halftime since October 2020 against Napoli.

Neres was pivotal in this match, scoring from both shots on target and making four touches in Atalanta’s box-the most alongside Giovanni Di Lorenzo for Napoli. The hosts exceeded their expected goals (xG) of 1.51 from 11 shots, while Atalanta managed only 0.78 xG.

This victory highlights Napoli’s attacking prowess and strategic planning under Conte’s guidance. Their ability to capitalise on opportunities has been crucial in maintaining their position at the top of Serie A.
