Washington Sundar, who was named in India’s Asia Cup reserves, has signed with Hampshire for the final two matches of the 2025 Championship campaign, the English county side announced on Thursday.
The move comes just weeks after the 25-year-old all-rounder starred in India’s five-match Test series against England in the UK.
Hampshire have roped in Sundar for their fixtures against Somerset and Surrey. “A signing we are certain of. Welcome, Washi. Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar will join the Rose and Crown for our final two @countychamp matches,” Hampshire Cricket posted on X.
Giles White, Hampshire’s Director of Cricket, said he was delighted to sign a player who had excelled during the fiercely contested five-match Test series between India and England.”We’re delighted to bring Washington to the club for the County Championship. He had an excellent series against England this summer and he’ll play a key role with two big games coming up against Somerset and Surrey,” White said.
In the thrilling five-match series, Washington scored 284 runs at an average of 47, including a maiden century at Old Trafford that helped India save the game. He also picked up seven wickets at 38.57.
This will be Washington’s second spell in county cricket, having represented Lancashire in the Championship and the One-Day Cup in 2022. He also becomes the second Indian to play for Hampshire this season, after left-hander Tilak Varma, who featured in four Championship matches earlier in the year.
So far, Washington has played 40 First-Class matches, including 13 Tests, scoring over 1,800 runs at an average of 34. He has also taken 91 wickets at an average of 28, with best figures of 7 for 59 against New Zealand in Pune in 2024.
The 25-year-old faces a tough challenge, as Hampshire sit in the relegation zone after being docked eight points on Thursday for breaching ECB pitch regulations, a penalty that pushed them down to eighth place in the Championship table. Hampshire will meet Somerset at Taunton’s Cooper Associates County Ground from September 15 to 18, before hosting defending champions Surrey at the Utilita Bowl from September 24 to 27.
