1. Nahay Khay is the first day of Chhath Puja, hence on this day Vrati (people observing fast) clean the house. That is, we make our house pure and sacred.
2. On the day of Nahay Khay, it is necessary for the fasting person to take bath in a holy river or pond. In this state, the devotees take a pledge for this fast which will last for 4 days.
3. On the day of Nahay Khay, fasting people eat only once. This food is prepared with great cleanliness and purity.
4. From this day onwards, bringing meat and liquor into the house is prohibited for the next 4 days, that is, no impure object of any kind is brought into the house.
