Nagpur NGO director held on charges of molestation; probe underway

New Delhi: The police have arrested the director of an NGO in Maharashtra‘s Nagpur for allegedly molesting a female employee and harassing other women in his office after they filed a complaint.

The officials revealed on Monday that he was also involved in other religious coercions. The accused is identified as 48-year-old Riyaz Fazil Qazi, who is a resident of Anant Nagar and runs an NGO in the name of ‘Universal Multipurpose Society’ at Jhingabai Takli in the city. He has employed five to six young women, said an official from Mankapur police station.

What do victims reveal in their complaints?

Out of the four women, three were victims, and one was their friend who approached the police station to lodge a complaint. A 23-year-old woman employee in her police complaint alleged that on her birthday the accused called her to his cabin and molested her.

The victim claimed that the accused attempted to molest her on multiple occasions, but she resisted. Later on, he allegedly made objectionable remarks to defame her and even created an Instagram page with his and her name to monitor the activities of other women employees, the official said.

The complainant further alleged that the accused even pressured her younger sister, who was also employed there, to follow the practices of a particular religion.

The police officials also revealed that other female employees also raised concerns about his behaviour.

Case registered and investigation underway

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case and finally on Sunday arrested the accused. The accused was subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him in police custody till April 23, the official said.

The police official said that the investigation is ongoing and multiple sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) that deal with assault, sexual harassment, stalking, hurting religious sentiments, defamation and unlawful monitoring of electronic communication have been invoked.
