New Delhi: A third year resident doctor from Nagaland working at AIIMS Gorakhpur said that three men racially abused, stalked and physically assault on Sunday evening. The incident happened near Gate number 2 of the institute around 8 pm on February 22, the police and news agency PTI said.
The obstetrics and gynaecology resident alleged she was coming back to campus when the accused followed her for about 1.5 kilometres. They reportedly confronted her near the gate and made obscene remarks and racial slurs about her northeastern origin.
Allegations of stalking and assault
According the complaint she filed, the doctor said one of the men removed his shirt to intimidate her. Another allegedly touched her in an inappropriate manner. She raised an alarm, following which the three fled the scene.
Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Kaustubh said a case has been filed at the AIIMS police station under relevant sections of law. He did not mention the exact charges.
“CCTV footage has assisted to identify a motorcycle linked to the accused. Four police teams have been formed to track them down,” the SSP said. He further said that strict action will be taken once the suspects are caught.
Resident doctors condemn attack
The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs addressed the issue on X. It called the incident as a “Shocking case of racial harassment and sexual assault on a third-year OBGYN resident near AIIMS Gorakhpur. Around 8 PM, on 22nd Feb, 2026 , while exiting Orion Mall, Gorakhpur (UP), three men stared, laughed, passed racially discriminatory comments, reducing her to stereotypes (being from NorthEast),” the federation alleged.
“She tried to confront them, but instead they stalked and followed her on the road toward AIIMS Gate No. 2, hurling abuses & slang. One of them deliberately removed his shirt to intimidate. Near the army camp at Gate No. 2, one man suddenly slapped even her on the buttocks,” the post further said.
“This left deep shock, humiliation & trauma on our resident doctor. As a doctor dedicated to women’s health & bringing new life, she was violated near her own institution,” it said.
Nagaland CM demands action
Nagaland Chief Minister Conrad Sangma condemned the attack. He said on X, “Racial discrimination and sexual harassment of women from the North East should not just be a headline, sensationalized, forgotten and revived every time a fresh incident appears.”
“The racial and sexual abuse of a resident Doctor of AIIMS Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh from Nagaland is deeply shameful. Outraging a woman’s modesty is not what a civilized nation should tolerate. They are your sisters and daughters too. Urge the authorities to take stringent actions against the perpetrators,” he said.
Police said they are working to identify and arrest the accused.
