‘My Name Is Jaan’ comes to Delhi: A moving tribute to Gauhar Jaan

New Delhi: The acclaimed solo musical play My Name Is Jaan is set to return to the stage in Delhi, promising audiences an evening of music, history, and powerful storytelling. The performance, led by actor-singer Arpita Chatterjee and directed by theatre-maker Abanti Chakraborty, will take place on November 16, 2025, at Kamani Auditorium.

The play has already received widespread praise across Mumbai and international venues, and its Delhi show is expected to draw a full house.

All about My Name Is Jaan

My Name Is Jaan tells the extraordinary story of Gauhar Jaan, who is widely celebrated as India’s first recording artist. At a time when gramophone technology was new to the country, Gauhar’s voice became one of the earliest to be recorded and distributed widely, making her a cultural icon in the early 20th century. The play traces her journey from fame to personal battles, while highlighting the complexities of recognition and legacy in Indian classical music.

The 90-minute solo performance demands exceptional emotional and musical range, both of which Arpita Chatterjee has been widely applauded for. Following the play’s premiere in Mumbai, veteran actor Anupam Kher praised her performance, saying, “What range of emotions, what grace, what a voice! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a performance of such calibre. I learnt so much from watching you.” His appreciation has helped the production gain further attention amongst theatre and cinema enthusiasts alike.

The direction by Abanti Chakraborty has been credited for blending historical narrative with intimate character moments, allowing viewers to connect with Gauhar not just as a legend but as a woman navigating success, loneliness, and reinvention. With live singing, minimalistic design, and evocative staging, the play promises a deeply immersive audience experience.

After successful runs in Mumbai, Kolkata and performances in Germany, the play is scheduled to tour Delhi. The production continues to be recognised not only as a tribute to Gauhar Jaan, but as a celebration of India’s early artistic modernity.
