“My Job Is Just To Score Runs”: Ishan Kishan’s Redemption After BCCI Contract Setback

New Delhi: Ishan Kishan’s journey back towards the top has taken a significant turn, with the wicketkeeper batter revealing how stepping away from the pressures of international cricket helped him rediscover his focus.

After smashing a remarkable 270 for East Zone in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone, Kishan said he has learned to shut out expectations and concentrate solely on his responsibility as a batter. The innings represented the clearest sign yet of his transformation following a difficult period in his career.
Kishan was an established all format India player in 2023, but a series of setbacks eventually saw him lose his place in the national team and his BCCI central contract. Instead of allowing the setback to define his career, he returned to domestic cricket and rebuilt his game through consistent performances.
During the 2025 26 Ranji Trophy season, Kishan registered centuries and also played a key role in Jharkhand’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy triumph, scoring 517 runs with two hundreds. His domestic form eventually helped him earn another BCCI contract and a return to India’s white ball setup.
Kishan believes the biggest change has been mental rather than technical. He now focuses on watching the ball, reacting naturally and avoiding unnecessary expectations about his performance.
His preparation for the Duleep Trophy final also involved extensive red ball practice at the BCCI Centre of Excellence. After an early dismissal in the tournament, he adjusted his approach and concentrated on building partnerships rather than chasing quick runs.
Kishan also said his stint in domestic cricket gave him an opportunity to start again, identify weaknesses and understand where he needed to improve. According to him, stepping back from international cricket allowed him to reflect, rebuild and develop a more composed approach to batting.
His 270 in the Duleep Trophy final now stands as a powerful indication of how far that transformation has taken him.
