A case of monorail accident has come to light during the trial run in Mumbai. The new rake was damaged in this accident near Wadala Depot station. However no one was injured. Know the reason for the accident and complete details of the upgradation.
Mumbai The country’s only monorail service met with an accident on Wednesday morning. A new rake of the Mumbai Monorail crashed during a trial run near Wadala Depot station. There is no news of anyone being injured in the accident, but the new coach of the train was damaged. The incident occurred when the train was changing tracks during testing of the signaling system.
Accident happened during trial run
According to the information, this incident occurred during a trial run under the technical upgradation programme. At the time of the accident, only the train captain and the company engineer were present in the train. Mahamumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) said in its official statement –
“A minor incident occurred during testing of signaling system as part of technical upgradation. The situation was immediately brought under control and no one was injured.”
The company said that this test was being conducted following all safety protocols.

Signaling system malfunction became the reason
Preliminary investigation has revealed that the accident occurred due to failure of signaling equipment. According to reports, due to a technical glitch the operation control room could not identify the actual location of the train. Meanwhile, the guideway beam switch was moved when the train was at the switch point, due to which the collision occurred. ‘Guideway beam switch’ is a complex mechanical system, which helps in turning monorail trains from one track to another.
There was a technical fault earlier also
This is not the first time that technical problems have arisen in Mumbai Monorail. Even on August 19, 2025, a monorail going from Wadala to Chembur had stopped midway. The passengers remained stranded for several hours and ultimately had to be rescued by breaking the glass.

According to the information, major technical changes are being made in Mumbai Monorail these days. For the first time, Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) technology is being implemented in it. This technology has been developed in Hyderabad and will make operations more safe by reducing the distance between trains.
The system includes –
- 5 electronic interlocking
- 260 Wi-Fi access points
- 500 RFID tags
- 90 Train Detection System
- and many safety equipment
Testing of all these is currently going on.
New racks under ‘Make in India’
Under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, 10 new rakes have been procured from MEDHA company in Mumbai Monorail. Besides, repair and upgradation of old racks is also going on so that such technical glitches can be avoided in future.
