Mumbai: Chawl collapses in Bandra East, 7 reported injured; rescue ops underway

Mumbai: A three-storey chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Bharat Nagar area in Bandra East on Friday morning. The incident was reported at 5:56 am and Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) rushed to the spot. After reaching the site, the MFB declared it a level-1 incident at 6:19 am.

The mishap took place at chawl number 37 in Bharat Nagar near Namaz Committee Mosque in Bandra East. The Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, 108 Ambulance Service and BMC ward staff are engaged in rescue work at the spot.

At least seven people have been reported injured in the mishap. They have been rescued and sent to the nearest hospital. More people are still feared trapped under the debris and rescue operations are underway to evacuate them.

Senior officials are monitoring the situation at the spot. Relief and rescue operations are underway, and the BMC has appealed to citizens to stay away from the area.

As per people present at the spot, the accident happened due to cylinder blast. At 5.40 am in the morning, they suddenly heard a blast. The trustees of the Namaz Committee Mosque said that when this accident came to light, they allowed the fire brigade to come to the first floor of the mosque so that people could be rescued.

So far seven injured people have been admitted to the Bandra Bhabha Hospital. The condition of the injured people is yet to be ascertained. Relief work is going on at a fast pace and senior officials are monitoring the spot. Locals have been appealed not to gather near the spot so that relief work is not hampered.
