Mumbai battered by heavy rain: Andheri subway closed, local trains delayed

Mumbai: The financial capital witnessed heavy rain early Monday morning, which caused severe waterlogging in several parts of the city. Civic officials said that in the past 24 hours (ending 8 am Monday), the coastal parts of the city received 23.45 mm of rain, the eastern suburbs received 36.42 mm, and the western suburbs saw 50.02 mm of rainfall.

Colaba, however, only received 11.2 mm of rain, showing that the rain was not evenly spread out across the city. The heavy rain during the night led to water being collected in many low-lying areas across Mumbai and its suburbs. People travelling during morning hours faced a lot of trouble due to the rain.

Andheri subway closed

The Andheri subway was shut because of too much water on the road, making traffic worse in that part of the city. Drivers said that traffic was slow on both the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway during the morning rush hours.

Some people also said that local trains were slightly delayed due to heavy rains and waterlogging. The IMD officials explained that the rain is due to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. This weather system has increased rainfall along the coast of Maharashtra, including Mumbai and nearby places.

No ‘red alert’ in Mumbai

Even though there is no red alert for Mumbai right now, the IMD has asked people—especially those going to work or traveling—to be careful, mainly in the evening, as some heavy rain is likely to happen in certain areas.

For the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Mumbai and its suburbs will have cloudy skies and moderate rain, with chances of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in a few spots. There was a high tide of 3.91 metres at 9.19 am, and another one of 3.38 metres is expected at 8.37 pm. A low tide of 2.28 metres is expected at 3.03 pm, according to a civic official.
