MS Dhoni on IPL Future, Former CSK Captain Says ‘Fitness Will Decide If I Play Another Season’

Former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has confirmed that his participation in the Indian Premier League hinges entirely on his physical conditioning, stating that he will undergo medical assessments before deciding whether to commit to another campaign.

Addressing the persistent speculation surrounding his playing career, the 45-year-old wicketkeeper-batter indicated that a final decision is expected before December.

Medical tests to dictate timeline

Speaking at a healthcare promotional event in Bengaluru, Dhoni explained that forthcoming medical evaluations will determine whether his body can endure the rigours of another tournament cycle.

‘I will have to go through the tests. The doctor will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see how strong I am to maybe play one more season,’ Dhoni said, addressing his current physical state.

Known for his measured demeanour, Dhoni used automotive imagery to frame his recovery and preparation, joking that the medical staff face the task of keeping him match-ready. ‘You will have to make sure that you do everything right with me and make sure that this old vintage vehicle is running well on the road. So all the pressure is on them,’ he added.

Management remains open to return

Dhoni retired from international cricket in August 2020 but has remained the central figure of Chennai Super Kings, guiding the franchise to five IPL titles before stepping back from full-time captaincy. He missed significant playing time during the previous campaign with soft-tissue issues, which cast doubt over whether he would return to the field. Chennai Super Kings chief executive Kasi Viswanathan noted that the franchise continues to give Dhoni full autonomy over his playing future.

‘It is a question you need to ask him,’ Viswanathan stated regarding the veteran’s status. ‘He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player.’

With player retention deadlines and squad planning scheduled ahead of the upcoming auction window, Dhoni’s timeline gives the CSK hierarchy until late autumn to finalise their wicketkeeping and finishing options.
