The incident took place on January 27 on the rooftop of a house in the airfield area of Bhubaneswar, where a crude bomb exploded. Its video is now going viral on social media.

26-year-old criminal and history-sheeter Shahnaz Malik, who was badly injured in this incident, died during treatment on February 4. A few days later, his 51-year-old mother Lijatun Bibi, who was seriously injured in the same blast, also died on 10 February at the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack. Malik’s 23-year-old friend Triptimayee Mahal and 27-year-old companion Amiya Mallik, who were injured in the incident, are currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar.

An officer of the Airfield Police Station said that Malik was badly burnt and died as treatment had no effect. Investigating officers had expressed suspicion that the blast occurred while preparing the bomb. Seven criminal cases including attempt to murder and Arms Act were registered against Shahnaz Malik, who was killed in this incident. Malik was released on bail after a political clash in Nayapalli about six months ago and the police were keeping an eye on him.

The explosion on the roof of the house was so powerful that even the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had to step into the investigation of the case. Officials said that no terrorism angle was found in the investigation, but we are investigating whether any bigger conspiracy is involved in this case.

Sources in the forensic lab said that more explosive material may have been used here. Initial investigations have revealed the use of high-explosive compounds like hexahydro trinitro triazine (RDX). A forensic officer said that further investigation is going on.

After the blast, bomb disposal squad, fire brigade and forensic teams reached the spot. They collected samples from the debris and seized the raw materials used in making bombs. People living in this three-storey rented house said, “We had no knowledge about this illegal act. We had no idea about it. All of our lives were in danger due to this act.”

Police are investigating whether Malik did this alone or if someone else was with him, and whether these bombs were to be used for any criminal or political violence. After the incident, security was increased in sensitive areas of the city. Meanwhile, a video of the moments of the blast has gone viral, in which flames are seen rising on the roof.
