Mohanlal mother Santhakumari dies at 90: Malayalam cinema is mourning a personal loss as Mohanlal’s mother, Santhakumari, passed away on Tuesday (December 30). She was 90. According to The Indian Express, she breathed her last at her residence in Elamakkara, located in Kerala’s Ernakulam district.
Santhakumari was a native of Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district. She later moved to Thiruvananthapuram with her family due to her husband, Viswanathan Nair’s, government posting. Nair, who passed away earlier, served as a senior bureaucrat and held the position of law secretary in the Kerala government. The family lived in Thiruvananthapuram for several decades, and that house remained closely tied to Mohanlal’s formative years.
Mohanlal’s mother passes away
In recent times, Santhakumari had been staying in Ernakulam after suffering a stroke. Mohanlal reportedly shifted her closer so she could receive better care and remain under constant supervision. The actor was in Kochi when he received the news of her passing and rushed to her home soon after being informed.
Mohanlal shared an especially close bond with his mother and often spoke about her influence on his life. That connection was visible even during his most celebrated moments. After receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the actor’s first visit upon returning to Kochi was to meet his mother. Earlier this year, on Mother’s Day, he also shared an old photograph of the two together, offering fans a rare glimpse into their private relationship.
Details on Santhakumari’s last rites
Santhakumari’s mortal remains are expected to be taken to Thiruvananthapuram later in the day, where final rites will likely be performed. Mohanlal is the younger of her two children. The family had earlier suffered another tragedy when their elder son, Pyarelal, passed away in 2000, a loss that deeply affected them.
On the professional front, Mohanlal was last seen in the epic fantasy action drama Vrusshabha, which added another ambitious title to his long and varied filmography. He is married to Suchitra, daughter of late producer K Balaji, and the couple have two children, Pranav and Vismaya.
