Mohammed Kudus scores as Ghana qualify for 2026 FIFA World Cup, Faroe Islands stuns Czech Republic

New Delhi: Mohammed Kudus scored to help Ghana beat Comoros 1-0 and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday. Ghana became the fifth African nation to book their spot in the next edition of the World Cup, which is set to be played in Canada, Mexico and the US next year. They have joined African nations Algeria, Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia in qualifying for the next year’s showpiece event.

Kudus got on the end of a pass from midfielder Thomas Partey in the 47th minute and finished from a close range to secure a 1-0 victory for Ghana in their World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Sunday. The Black Caps will now be heading to their fifth FIFA World Cup next year, having been part of four editions of the tournament in the past.

Ghana would have qualified for the World Cup even if they failed to beat Comoros after Madagascar lost 4-1 to Mali on the same day. With their victory against Comoros on Sunday, Ghana topped Group I in the African qualifiers with 25 points from eight wins in ten matches. Ghana’s best finish in the World Cup came in 2010 when they reached the quarterfinals.

Egypt, who have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup, continued their unbeaten run in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after beating Guinea-Bissau 1-0 in their final Group A fixture in Cairo. Egypt rested captain Mohamed Salah for the game, however, they didn’t miss the star forward as Mohamed Hamdi’s header secured a comfortable victory for them.

Faroe Islands stun Czech Republic

Ranked 136th, the Faroe Islands pulled off a shock victory over Czech Republic in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers to keep their hopes of qualifying for next year’s tournament alive. A late winner from substitute Martin Agnarsson helped Faroe Islands beat Czech Republic and jump to the third spot on the Group L table in the FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers.

Hanus Sorensen scored in the second half to put Faroe Islands ahead in the game, before Adam Karabec equalised for the Czech Republic in the 78th minute to make it 1-1. Agnarsson scored late after a defensive mistake from Czech Republic to seal a 2-1 victory for the underdogs.

Meanwhile, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo scored to help Netherlands beat Finland 4-0 in their World Cup qualifier on Sunday. Netherlands continue to sit at the top of the Group G points table after their victory and are close to securing their spot in the World Cup next year. They have 16 points from six matches in the qualifiers.
