Mirabai Chanu bags silver at World Weightlifting Championships

New Delhi: Olympic medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins a silver medal in the 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025 in Forde, Norway. She extends her streak in the prestigious event, marking her third time on the podium.

Mirabai achieved a total lift of 199kg (84kg in snatch + 115kg in clean and jerk), after moving down from the 49kg division.

Although she faced some difficulty with the snatch, falling twice at 87kg, she regained her rhythm during the clean and jerk. She is also a former record holder in the clean and jerk, successfully executing all three attempts with lifts of 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg with ease.

The last time the 2017 world champion lifted 115kg was at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she secured second place on the podium. As reported by PTI, the aim of these World Championships was to surpass the 200kg mark and to lift weights comparable to those Chanu has managed in the 49kg category, as stated by chief coach Vijay Sharma.

North KoreaтАЩs Ri Song-gum dominated the division, securing three gold medals in the 48kg category. She set new records with a 91kg snatch, a 112kg clean and jerk, and a total lift of 213kg. ThailandтАЩs Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed bronze with a total of 198kg (88kg + 110kg).

Chanu made her return to competitive weightlifting after Paris 2024 at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in August, where she won gold. Her performance in Norway is expected to boost her confidence and contribute to her list of international records.

In the menтАЩs category, Lovepreet Singh, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, is leading the Indian contingent at the World Championships.
