Michael Hussey’s decision to turn down England’s full-time Test batting coach role is less a rejection of international cricket than a reflection of how the former Australia batter has built his coaching career since retirement.
Hussey was approached by England head coach Stephen Fleming, his long-time colleague from Chennai Super Kings, about joining the Test setup. But the 51-year-old has opted instead for a part-time consultancy role with Cricket Australia, a move that allows him to remain involved with franchise cricket, The Hundred and his broadcasting commitments.
The decision also leaves an intriguing question around Hussey’s future with CSK, who are now searching for a successor to Fleming after the New Zealander’s move into England’s Test setup.
Why did Michael Hussey reject England?
Hussey’s decision appears to have been driven primarily by the demands of a full-time international coaching role.
The England position would have involved extensive travel and a significant commitment to the Test side as it prepares for a demanding period culminating in the 2027 Ashes. Instead, Hussey has chosen a more flexible arrangement with Cricket Australia.
That allows him to combine international work with his existing commitments in franchise cricket and media.
It is also worth noting that Hussey is not unfamiliar with England. He previously worked as a part-time batting consultant during their successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign.
So his decision should not necessarily be read as a reluctance to work with England. Rather, the structure of the role appears to have been the decisive factor.
What is Michael Hussey’s coaching career?
Hussey has gradually developed a substantial coaching portfolio since retiring from international cricket in 2013.
His most prominent role has come with Chennai Super Kings, where he has worked as batting coach alongside Fleming. Their association stretches back much further, however, with the pair having spent 18 years together at the IPL franchise across Hussey’s playing and coaching careers.
Hussey has also moved beyond the IPL.
He has worked with Welsh Fire in The Hundred and served as the team’s head coach this year, while his experience with England during their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign gave him exposure to international coaching.
His work has therefore increasingly straddled three areas: franchise cricket, international consultancy and broadcasting.
That balance is precisely what the Cricket Australia role allows him to preserve.
How is Michael Hussey’s Australia role different?
Rather than taking on a permanent position, Hussey is set to work with Cricket Australia as a part-time consultant.
That gives Australia an experienced former international batter without requiring Hussey to abandon the other parts of his career.
It is particularly useful for Australia with the 2027 Ashes approaching. Hussey’s international career included 79 Tests, 185 ODIs and 38 T20Is, while his experience in franchise cricket has added another dimension to his coaching background.
For Australia, his appointment is therefore both an Ashes boost and a way of bringing Hussey into the setup without demanding the level of commitment that England’s role would have required.
What does this mean for CSK?
This is where Hussey’s decision becomes particularly interesting.
CSK are looking for a successor to Fleming after the New Zealander ended his long association with the franchise to take charge of England’s Test side. Hussey immediately stands out as a logical candidate because of his deep familiarity with the organisation.
He played for CSK under MS Dhoni before moving into coaching and working alongside Fleming. Few potential candidates would have the same understanding of the franchise’s culture, personnel and methods.
However, there is currently no confirmation that CSK have offered Hussey the head coach position.
His decision to reject England does, though, leave the door open to a coaching future that is built around shorter, more flexible commitments.
Could Michael Hussey become CSK head coach?
Hussey’s current career trajectory makes the possibility intriguing, but it remains speculation at this stage.
His rejection of England does not automatically mean he is positioning himself for the CSK job. His stated preference, as reflected in the reports, is for consultancy roles that allow him to maintain his family, franchise and media commitments.
But CSK’s situation makes the Australian a natural name to consider.
He already understands the franchise from the inside, has worked closely with Fleming and has experience transitioning from player to coach within the same environment. If CSK want continuity rather than a complete reset following Fleming’s departure, Hussey would offer exactly that.
For now, however, his next confirmed step is with Cricket Australia.
And that may be the clearest indication of where Hussey sees his coaching career at this stage: not necessarily tied to one national team, but built around a portfolio of international consultancy, franchise cricket and media work.
