MI lowest points table finishes in IPL History: Worst seasons explained

The Mumbai Indians (MI) is no doubt one of the most successful teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) who have won five IPL trophies and have one of the biggest fan bases in the tournament.

The side is also known for featuring some of the biggest stars in international cricket throughout the years as well.

Though there have been some successful seasons, there have been a few of them have ended on disappointing notes as well, which the fans would not want to recall. It is time to discuss what went wrong in these seasons and at what position the side achieved during these years as well. Though there have been other seasons where they have failed to make it into the top four, it is these seasons that have been a complete disaster for the Men in Blue and Gold.

Here are the worst seasons for Mumbai Indians in IPL history:

3. IPL 2009: Wins- 05, losses- 08, N/R- 01 (Position – 7th)

The Mumbai Indians were led by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during this season, which was played in South Africa. The franchise had some big stars within their team, but some of those big stars could not find any form during that season. Some of them were meant to play some crucial roles in the team as well. The tournament for MI was done after they lost their last three games and finished seventh on the table that year.

There were still some positives in the Mi franchise during that season, which includes Lasith Malinga who was the fourth-highest wicket taker in the tournament with 18 wickets. None of the MI batters went on to score over 400 runs that season, which was again, quite disappointing.

Though the Mumbai Indians have had terrible seasons, they had never finished at the bottom of the table before the 2022. Despite having some young promising players within the team, the absence of some match-winners like Suryakumar Yadav and a poor season for MI legends Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard led to this being one of the worst seasons of the franchise. This season also saw MI break the record of having an eight-game losing streak.

The only batter to get to the 400 run mark within the Mumbai Indians franchise was Ishan Kishan and the highest wicket-taker for the team that season was Jasprit Bumrah with 15 wickets to his name. These were truly disappointing stats for a team that already had five trophies in their cabinet.

Though the 2022 season saw the MI franchise suffer one of their worst losing streaks at the start, the last season in 2024 seemed to be the biggest disaster for the team since not only was the team suffering big losses, but the fan base had also turned on the team due to a controversial decision to change captaincy. Despite having some great performances, the team could not get the better of the sides in the clutch moments, and the poor form and hate towards new skipper Hardik Pandya made the season even more forgettable.

Despite the catastrophic campaign, notable performances from Rohit Sharma and Tilak Varma during this season, but in the situation the franchise would have wanted more from them. Jasprit Bumrah was in incredible form for the franchise and was the third-highest wicket taker that season with 20 wickets from 13 games.
