Mexico 1-0 Australia As Vasquez Seals Friendly Win For World Cup Co-hosts

Mexico continued preparations for the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Australia at the Rose Bowl. Johan Vasquez scored the only goal in the first half, giving the World Cup co-hosts a narrow victory over the Socceroos in their final match before squad deadlines.

Both Mexico and Australia have yet to reveal their final World Cup squads, so this friendly carried extra weight. Javier Aguirre used the chance to experiment, making nine changes from the team that beat Ghana 2-0 in El Tri’s previous outing.

The breakthrough arrived after 28 minutes when Vasquez met Alexis Vega’s corner with a firm header. Australia’s attack offered limited threat for long spells, although a mistake from Luis Chavez just before half-time handed Mohammed Traore a chance, which Traore could not take.

After the restart, Ajdin Hrustic produced Australia’s best effort, forcing long-serving Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa into action. Mexico thought a second goal had arrived later in the half, but the effort was ruled out, and Aguirre’s side closed out a tight win without further drama.

Vega delivered the standout display for Mexico, despite Vasquez supplying the goal. Vega created three chances, the most for Mexico, and one of those led to the decisive header. Vega also pushed play forward with 13 passes into the final third and attempted two shots.

The expected goals numbers underlined the lack of clear openings, with Mexico registering 0.41 and Australia 0.48. Connor Metcalfe matched Vega’s 13 passes into the final third, highlighting the midfield battle, but neither side turned those phases into many high-quality chances.

Mexico vs Australia World Cup warm-up in global context

Elsewhere in World Cup build-up action, Son Heung-min struck twice as South Korea beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0. Cho Gue-sung and Hwang Hee-chan also scored in that one-sided contest, which gave South Korea a strong result before the tournament.

Ecuador also recorded a victory, overcoming Saudi Arabia 2-1. Ecuador did so without Moises Caicedo and Piero Hincapie, who had been involved in Champions League duty with Arsenal and were not used. Saudi Arabia fell short despite facing a rotated Ecuador side.

For Mexico, the Rose Bowl win closed their World Cup schedule on a positive note and rewarded Vasquez and Vega. Australia left with limited attacking reward, though Harry Souttar’s post-match message showed continued pride as both nations now move from trials to final tournament focus.
