India’s hopes of reaching the semifinals of the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 have suffered a massive blow after Harmanpreet Singh and Co. went down 1-3 against reigning Olympic champions Netherlands in their second-round clash on Saturday.
India needed a positive result against the Dutch to strengthen their position in Pool E, but despite dominating large periods of the first half, they conceded three goals after the break.
Harmanpreet Singh scored India’s only goal, while Duco Telgenkamp, Tjep Hoedemakers and Thijs van Dam were on target for the Netherlands.
With the defeat, India remain without a point in the second phase and now face an uphill battle to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
The new 2026 format has no quarter-final stage, with the top two teams from each second-phase pool advancing directly to the semifinals.
India Need A Big Win Against Argentina
India’s final Pool E match will be against Argentina on Monday, and the result has now become a must-win encounter.
The Netherlands have already secured their place in the semifinals after winning both their matches and moving to six points. Argentina and England are currently on three points each, while India are yet to open their account.
For India to have any realistic chance of finishing second, they need to defeat Argentina by a significant margin. The current equation requires India to win by at least five goals and hope the other result goes their way.
Netherlands Must Beat England
India’s qualification hopes do not depend solely on their own result.
The Netherlands must defeat England in the other Pool E match. If England win or draw against the Dutch, India’s semifinal hopes will be over regardless of what happens against Argentina.
If the Netherlands beat England and India manage a sufficiently large victory over Argentina, the three teams could finish on three points behind the already-qualified Dutch, with goal difference becoming decisive in determining the second semifinalist.
India vs Argentina: What India Need
India’s semifinal qualification scenario is now extremely difficult:
- India must beat Argentina.
- India need to win by around five goals to put themselves in contention on goal difference.
- Netherlands must beat England in the other Pool E match.
- If England avoid defeat against the Netherlands, India will be eliminated.
- The Netherlands have already qualified for the semifinals with six points.
India’s clash against Argentina is scheduled for Monday, August 24, with the match listed for 6:30 PM IST.
