Imphal: A video of discussions in Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has gone viral in which National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Mehtab Chandee A Sangma can be seen asking questions to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on livestock education projects.
The Gambegre MLA raised her questions during question hour and wanted to know about the progress made at the veterinary college, two fisheries colleges and a dairy college, which were cleared by the state cabinet in 2022.
Mehtab shared concerns on veterinary training centres
During the discussion, Mehtab shared concerns over several staff in veterinary training centres. She wanted to know what steps the government is taking to address the issue.
Sharing the video, several social media users noted on the unusual sight of discussions between husband and wife on the floor of the Assembly. Despite being husband and wife, both leaders put personal feelings aside and behaved according to Assembly protocol. Both addressed the speaker while putting forward their points.
What was CM’s reply?
Replying to the question, CM Sanghma said that the aim of setting up these institutions was to further strengthen the livestock sector in the state. Notably, a large section of the people in Meghalaya are dependent on this sector.
“These were the three colleges which we have decided, because of the urgent need, keeping in mind that a large population of the state is engaged in livestock rearing,” he said as per news agency PTI.
Admitting the shortage of staff, he added, “It is definitely a matter of concern. Steps are being taken to ensure the manpower shortage is filled up at the earliest.” He further assured that the vacancy would be filled. Speaking on the delay on project reports, the CM added that the process took time due to land identification and planning manpower needs.
