Meg Lanning Returns as Melbourne Stars Captain for WBBL 12, Aims for Team Victory

Former Australian captain Meg Lanning is set to lead the Melbourne Stars once again in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) 12. This move follows Annabel Sutherland’s decision to step down after two years at the helm.

Lanning, who last captained the team in 2023, emphasized her focus on team success, stating, ‘Whatever’s going to help the team win and play at our best.’

The decision to reinstate Lanning came after discussions on optimizing the squad, also considering Sutherland’s demanding role as an international all-rounder. Sutherland will remain a key part of the leadership group, allowing her to focus more on her on-field performance. Lanning will collaborate with new coach Richard Pyrah, who brings a fresh perspective from his tenure with Yorkshire. Pyrah’s arrival has already provided clearer direction for the team, according to Lanning.

The Stars are also banking on young talent like Rhys McKenna, who is expected to open alongside Lanning after a strong showing in the T20 Spring Challenge. The team’s bowling attack, despite the absence of Marizanne Kapp, boasts variety with Australia international Kim Garth and Annabel Sutherland leading the pace department. England’s Charlie Dean will bolster the spin options, bringing her extensive experience and composure to the team. Lanning believes Dean’s ability to handle pressure and bowl tough overs will be a significant asset in T20 cricket.
