Meethe Mein Kya Hai Review: Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangady’s Film Wraps You In A Warm Hug

With Diwali celebrations just around the corner, most of the Indian households will be gearing up to welcome their family and friends home. Well, Netflix’s recently premiered film Meethe Mein Kya Hai might just be the movie you can watch during one such gathering, so that you can grow closer to your family. It stars an ensemble cast of Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangady, Kanikka Kapur, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Vikram Bakshi, and Dalai, among many others.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai: Plot & Cast

The movie follows the journey of Jai (Ritwik Bhowmik), a widower, still grieving the death of his beloved wife, Tara (Kanikka Kapur), even after two years. All set to move abroad, leaving behind his career and his family, he gets pulled into a Diwali celebration at his maternal grandmother’s house (Rohini Hattangady).

With attempts being made to get him to move on, he finds himself in the midst of chaos, after his sister Sana (Dalai) announces to the family that she eloped and got married to Karam (Vikram Bakshi), a divorcee and father to a daughter. Jai, though adamant, starts opening up to Anya (Kiara Chouhan), a teenage kid from the neighbourhood. What happens next? Does he overcome the grief with the help of his family?

Written and directed by debutant Radhika Bansal, the stars an ensemble cast of Ritwik Bhowmik, Rohini Hattangady, Kanikka Kapur, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Vikram Bakshi, and Dalai, among many others.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai: What Works

Well, the movie is quite an entertaining watch. Families, no-matter how dysfunctional they are, always want what’s best for you. And they express it by meddling in your life, so that you don’t have to suffer too much, is what the film conveys perfectly. The plot of the film is quite straight-forward and the dynamics between characters are something you will constantly see all around you. The simplicity shown in the film is what makes it resonate with you.

Talking about the performances, the star for me is hands down Ritwik Bhowmik. He played the character of Jai, so effortlessly. Bringing an aura of sadness and loneliness, one feels after losing the love of their life, while trying to convey to their family that they are fine, he puts his best foot forward.

While Ayesh makes sure to stand out with her loud and over-emotive mother characters, Hattangadi brings a calm feeling, which binds not only the family members, but also the film together beautifully.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai: What Doesn’t Work

While the movie is the perfect watch for the upcoming Diwali week, Meethe Mein Kya Hai, sometimes feels a bit stretched, like it is trying to tick off boxes from a list of tropes they have included in the script. However, that doesn’t have much impact on the pacing of the film, as it is supported by exceptional music and cinematography, which keeps you engaged throughout.

Meethe Mein Kya Hai: Final Verdict

All in all, if you have free time this weekend, do tune into the movie and give it a watch on Netflix. Meethe Mein Kya Hai serves as a reminder that at the end of the day the acceptance and love your family has for you, you might not find it anywhere else.
