Muskan Rastogi, the wife of Navy Officer Saurabh Rajput, who is accused of killing him, has sought permission from the jail authorities in Meerut to study law in order to represent herself in the court, as per a report by The Times of India.
According to an official of the Meerut jail, Rastogi has expressed dissatisfaction with her lawyer’s support and stated that she wants to argue the murder case on her own in court.
Muskan is accused of killing her husband with the help of her partner, Sahil. She allegedly dismembered his body, stuffed it in a blue drum, and filled it with cement to cover the crime.
On May 18, the body was discovered at Rajput’s Brahmpuri residence in Meerut after the labourer saw it while shifting the drum. The case garnered widespread attention and made headlines with chilling developments by each passing day.
Muskan and Sahil were later arrested after they returned from a trip to Himachal Pradesh’s Kasol. They were sent to Chaudhary Charan Singh District Jail in Meerut after a court rejected their bail petition.
The TOI, based on the jail official’s account, stated that Rastogi lacks a senior secondary certificate, which is mandatory for pursuing LLB in India. She studied till class 8.
The authorities have started to explore the ways in which she can pursue legal studies. However, she will have to complete her senior secondary education.
Viresh Raj Sharma, the Meerut Jail superintendent, said, “Since Muskan was lodged in jail, no one from her family has visited her, while Sahil’s maternal grandma and brother met him. Now, Muskan has sought the process to study legal education and we are thinking about it. If she wants to study, jail authorities will provide all necessary resources to her”.
