The name of the goddess we are talking about is Meenakshi Devi. His temple is considered special all over India. His temple is located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Meenakshi Devi is considered to be the incarnation of Mother Parvati. Meenakshi Devi temple is 2500 years old. Here the Goddess is seated with Lord Shiva. According to a legend, King Malayadhwaja Pandya of Madurai and his wife conducted a grand yagya to have a child. Due to the virtuous effect of the Yagya, a girl was born in the king’s house, but she was as old as three years of age at birth. Her eyes were as beautiful as those of a fish. Seeing such appearance of their daughter, the parents named her Meenakshi.

Apart from being different in age and beauty, Meenakshi was also different in physical structure. She had three breasts. The king and queen were sad because of this. Then one day Lord Shiva appeared to the king. God told the king that the day his daughter would find a suitable groom, her third breast would disappear. Also, Lord Shiva told the king that his daughter is very courageous.

Not only this, his daughter will rule his kingdom. Meenakshi Devi was courageous by birth, hence she defeated many kings. Many gods were also defeated one after the other. Stories of bravery of Meenakshi Devi were being sung all over the world. Then one day the Goddess sat on her victory chariot and went to the forest, where she met a young monk. As soon as she saw him, her third breast disappeared. With this, Meenakshi Devi realized that the monk youth was a suitable groom for her.

This monk was none other than Lord Shiva himself. His name was Sundareshwar Dev. Seeing Sundareshwar Dev, Meenakshi Devi remembered that she had met this young man earlier also. At the same time he remembered that he himself was the incarnation of Mother Parvati and the young man was none other than Lord Shiva. In this way Meenakshi Devi reached Madurai and got married to Sundareshwar Dev.
