Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, at least 45 Indian Umrah pilgrims have lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Saudi Arabia early on Monday. As per reports, all victims are from Hyderabad. The bus ferrying pilgrims from Mecca to Medina rammed into a diesel tanker at around 1.30 am IST.
In light of the tragic bus accident near Madinah in Saudi Arabia, a 24×7 control room has been also been set up in Consulate General of India, Jeddah. Union Minister of Minority Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for strength in this difficult time. Rijiju said, “We are in touch with Embassy officials who are gathering more details & extending all possible assistance.”

Rijiju added, “Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah are also in touch with Saudi Haj and Umrah Ministry, and other local authorities. A team of Consulate staff and Indian community volunteers is on the ground at various hospitals and sites. Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah are extending fullest support. Officials of the Embassy and the Consulate are also in touch with the concerned officials of the State of Telangana to coordinate with the concerned families.”
I’m shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic bus accident on the Medina–Mecca highway in Saudi Arabia that claimed the lives of Indian pilgrims.

Reacting to the incident, Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also expressed “deep shock”. He added that the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah were extending full support to those injured and to the families of the victims.
