West Indies posted 295 for 7 wickets in their first innings during the opening ODI against India at Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram, on September 27, 2026. The day-night match saw India choose to field after winning the toss.
John Campbell played a key role in the West Indies innings, scoring 62 runs off 60 deliveries to anchor the early batting.
Campbell was part of a significant opening partnership with Justin Greaves that yielded 135 runs. The partnership provided a solid foundation for the West Indies batting effort in the match. After the innings concluded, Campbell offered his assessment of the team’s total and the conditions faced during the day-night encounter.
The West Indies opener reflected on his team’s total after the innings concluded, considering both the competitive nature of the score and the challenges posed by changing pitch conditions. Campbell recognised that the ball’s condition significantly influenced batting freedom as the match progressed.
“I think it’s a pretty decent total, maybe 15-20 runs a little bit short. But having said that, I think when the ball gets a little softer, it’s a little bit more difficult to score,” Campbell said during the mid-innings break while speaking on JioHotstar.
Campbell’s 62-run innings reflected a disciplined approach focused on building partnerships and maintaining momentum throughout his time at the crease. His batting strategy during the opening partnership with Greaves demonstrated how he adapted to the match situation and supported his partner’s aggressive start. While Greaves scored a flurry of boundaries inside the powerplay, Campbell was happy playing second fiddle. He explained that this approach wasn’t a premeditated one.
“I think it just happened. Justin had a really good start, so I just tried to play a supporting role as best as possible to get going,” Campbell said.
The West Indies squad prioritised focusing on their cricket despite external distractions during the tour of India. Campbell emphasised the team’s determination to deliver strong performances and make an impact on the series.
“Yeah, definitely. With a lot of noise around outside of the cricket, we just decided we just want to come out here and put on a good show for ourselves and make the people back home proud,” Campbell said.
