Matsya Avatar of Lord Vishnu (First Avatar of Vishnu)

Lord Vishnu, the creator of the world, assumed 10 incarnations, the first of which is the Matsya incarnation. The Matsya incarnation of Lord Vishnu took place at the beginning of Satyayuga, during the Pralaya period. There were mainly two reasons behind assuming this incarnation – one was to protect Manu from the cataclysm and the other was to bring back the Vedas from the demon Hayagriva. When King Satyavrata places a small fish in a Kamandal, that fish starts growing rapidly and later becomes the Matsya incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Why did Matsya incarnate? (Why Matsya Avatar came)

According to the legend, once a terrible cataclysm was about to occur on Earth. Then Lord Vishnu instructed King Satyavrata Manu to board a boat with seeds, grains, medicines and seven sages for all living beings. After this, Lord Vishnu took the form of a small fish to save Manu, which gradually became very huge.

When there was deluge all around, Manu saved his life by tying his boat to a fish horn. After the end of the holocaust, he killed Hayagriva and handed over the Vedas to Brahma. Description of this story is also found in Matsya Purana. The dialogue between Lord Vishnu and Satyavrata is described in the form of Matsyapuran.

Story of Matsya Avatar (Vishnu Matsya Avatar story)

According to the legend, a demon named Hayagriva stole the Vedas while Brahma was sleeping and hid them in the depths of the ocean, thereby spreading ignorance and sin in the world. Without Vedas, ignorance and unrighteousness spread in the world. All the gods approached Lord Vishnu to get the solution to this problem.

Lord Vishnu took the form of Matsya to kill Hayagriva and bring back the Vedas. Lord Vishnu took the incarnation of Matsya and killed the demon Hayagriva and saved the universe from destruction. After the retrieval of the Vedas, Lord Vishnu handed over the Vedas to Brahmaji, due to which a new cycle of creation could begin and the spread of knowledge became possible.
