When is the fair of Kansa slaughter celebrated?
This fair is celebrated every year on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. According to mythological beliefs, on this day Lord Shri Krishna established religion by killing his tyrannical maternal uncle Kansa.
Kansa Vadh Mela 2025 date
According to Drik Panchang, in the year 2025, Kartik Shukla Dashami Tithi will start on October 31 at 10:03 am and will end on November 1 at 9:11 am. According to Udaya Tithi, Kansa Vadh Mela will be celebrated on 1 November 2025 (Saturday).
Unique ritual and tradition of Chaturvedi society
This fair is completely organized by the Chaturvedi Samaj, who symbolically repeat the entire sequence of Kansa’s killing:
Start of war with sticks
A huge effigy of Kansa is constructed for this day. While enacting a dramatization of the killing of Kansa, the people of Chaturvedi community attack the effigy of Kansa with sticks. This ritual is seen as the beginning of the war waged by Lord Krishna and Balarama against Kansa.
Victory procession and tradition of hanging heads
After the symbolic killing of Kansa, the people of Chaturvedi community take out a grand victory procession. In this procession, the effigy of Kansa is dragged on the ground and taken to the resting place. The most unique way of showing the joy of victory is that the people of the society cut off the head of the effigy of Kansa and bring it hanging on their sticks. This scene symbolizes the decisive victory of good over evil.
Fair excitement and tableaus
The celebration of this historic victory of killing Kansa is not limited to Mathura only. Attractive tableaux from different districts of the country come to participate in this fair. In these tableaux, the pastimes of Gods and Goddesses and mythological scenes are beautifully presented, which creates a devotional and festive atmosphere in the entire environment.
Parikrama for acquittal of murder
Even though the killing of Kansa was done for the establishment of religion, the Chaturvedi community also performs a special ritual to get rid of the symbolic guilt of killing their maternal uncle. After killing Kansa, these people circumambulate Mathura, Garuda Govind and Vrindavan seeking salvation and blessings from their beloved Shri Krishna.
End at rest stop
The fair concludes in the evening with a very beautiful and religious scene at Vishram Ghat. The entire ghat shines with the grand lamp donation organized on the banks of Yamuna. Thousands of lamps are lit and with this the fair of Kansa slaughter formally ends.
