Monthly Shivratri fasting story (Story of monthly Shivratri fast)

There are mainly two mythological stories of monthly Shivratri – the story of hunter Chitrabhanu and the story of a Brahmin couple. In both the stories, emphasis is laid on the importance of unknowing devotion and service to the needy, which brings blessings of Lord Shiva and fulfills all the wishes.

The story of Chitrabhanu hunter

According to the legend, once upon a time Chitrabhanu was a hunter who used to feed his family by hunting animals. He owed a lot to the moneylender. One Shivratri, the moneylender took him captive in exchange for a loan. At the same place Chitrabhanu performed Shivratri puja and listened to the story.

The next day he went hunting in the forest but did not find anything. Then at night he climbed a vine tree, under which there was a Shivalinga. Bel leaves kept falling on Shivalinga from his bow throughout the night and due to not killing the deer, he unknowingly completed the fast of Shivratri. In such a situation, unknowingly, due to the influence of Shivratri fast and worship, his heart became pure and he left the hunter’s life and became a devotee of Shiva.

Story of Brahmin couple

According to another legend, a Brahmin and his wife used to observe monthly Shivratri fast every month. Once he observed a fast with full devotion and sought blessings from Lord Shiva. After Shivratri fast, he gave Dakshina to some passers-by. The same day a poor Brahmin came to his village and he fed him. In this way, by feeding the needy and observing the fast with true devotion, Lord Shiva blessed him and all his wishes were fulfilled.
