Maserati’s next supercar could come with a manual gearbox

New Delhi: There might be some rocky waters in the future of the Maserati, with sales collapsing in 2024, and the rumours about its sale are still quite loud. Still, the best might be yet to come if the company can gain some traction; there might be a new flagship model with a manual transmission in the coming year.

While there is little known at the moment, Maserati engineering boss Davide Danesin, during an interview with Autocar, indicated that the supercar could have a manual gearbox. Danesin also noted that there remained customers who were inclined towards “mechanical cars” and didn’t want an electric car.

Maserati rethinking EV stance

Maserati, earlier this year, cancelled the electric MC20 due to poor demand, making it join a group of high-end automakers who are rethinking EVs. Quite a few automakers have recommitted to building internal combustion engines, with demand for EVs falling in certain markets. Even Lamborghini might eventually abandon the electric GT for a hybrid as well.

During the interview with Autocar, Danesin noted that a complete mechanical car should have a mechanical gearbox with a shifter and felt it was the direction that the brand would probably head in.

It is being rumoured that the Maserati will base the car on the GranTurismo and even use the brand’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre Nettuno V6 engine. It produces 621 bhp in the MCPura, though it will have power if it comes in a limited-run holo vehicle.

Still, the limited car might not be the answer to fix the company’s financial situation at the moment. Last year, while leaving the company, former Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares stated that the conglomerate would decide the fate of its 14 brands this year, and the Italian company has little time to prove its worth. However, with a new boss at the helm of Stellantis, things could be looking different now behind the scenes. However, in any situation, the brand isn’t bringing the electric motors or batteries into their car.
