South African fast bowler Marco Jansen claimed five wickets as Australia collapsed for 99 in their first innings on the fourth day of the second Test at St George’s Park on Wednesday.
Jansen returned figures of 5/33 in 11 overs to bowl out Australia in 42.3 overs. South Africa then enforced the follow-on after securing a commanding 326-run first-innings lead.
The hosts had declared their first innings at 425/9 in the rain-affected Test.
Jansen ripped through Australia’s top order, claiming four wickets for 16 runs in seven overs during the morning session. Australia reached lunch at 69/6 after 33 overs.
The 26-year-old left-arm pacer dismissed nightwatchman Scott Boland for two with his first delivery. He then trapped opener Travis Head lbw for 14, with a television review confirming the decision.
Jansen used extra pace and bounce to remove Matt Renshaw for 12, who edged a delivery to gully. Two balls later, he dismissed Alex Carey for a duck with a catch behind the stumps.
Anrich Nortje dismissed Marnus Labuschagne for 14 after Simon Harmer took a diving, one-handed catch in the slips. However, Nortje later left the field with a leg injury.
Steve Smith top-scored for Australia with 28 runs, becoming the third Australian batter to reach 11,000 Test runs. He achieved the milestone before Wiaan Mulder bowled him.
Smith remained the only Australian batter to score more than 20 runs as South Africa’s pace attack dominated the innings.
