Marco Bezzecchi acknowledges new challenge as teammate Francesco Bagnaia joins Aprilia

Aprilia’s audacious signing of double MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia for the 2027 season has sent shockwaves through the paddock, but no one feels the impact more personally than Marco Bezzecchi.

This impending partnership is not just a blockbuster move for the Italian manufacturer-it represents a seismic shift in the careers of two of the VR46 Riders Academy’s finest graduates.

For the first time, Bezzecchi and Bagnaia, who have shared parallel trajectories since their formative days in Valentino Rossi’s academy, will become teammates for a full season. Despite years spent chasing the same MotoGP dreams and nurturing a close friendship, the pair have never experienced the intensity of a weekend together under one garage roof. “I’m obviously happy for him, for the team, for the factory,” Bezzecchi stated. Yet, he quickly acknowledged the complexity of the new arrangement: “I think it’s very cool, but honestly, it will be strange to share the box.”

Bagnaia has carved his name into MotoGP history as a two-time champion and the face of Ducati, while Bezzecchi has steadily risen to become Aprilia’s technical spearhead. Until now, their rivalry has been defined by a comfortable separation-different teams, engineers, and ambitions. That dynamic will be obliterated in 2027. “We have always been rivals and we always will be, but we have never been this close over an entire weekend,” Bezzecchi admitted. The reality of sharing data, comparing set-ups, and living every session in direct comparison will fundamentally alter their relationship.

Recent high-profile teammate pairings such as Marc Marquez and Bagnaia at Ducati, or Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi at Yamaha, have demonstrated how the pressure cooker of a shared garage can rapidly transform alliances into fiercely competitive showdowns.

Bezzecchi, however, remains upbeat about Aprilia’s environment. “I am very, very happy,” he said, highlighting the “excellent atmosphere within the team.” He also praised his current rapport with Jorge Martin: “My relationship with Jorge is also very good and we have created a very good atmosphere in the box.” This is no accident-Aprilia has invested heavily in cultivating a harmonious workplace, but Bagnaia’s arrival will be the ultimate test of that culture.

On paper, Aprilia’s 2027 line-up promises fireworks. Bezzecchi, now intimately familiar with the RS-GP and instrumental in its development, will be joined by Bagnaia, whose championship pedigree and Ducati-honed experience could be transformative. Two Italian stars, both VR46 alumni, both renowned for their professionalism and calm demeanour, will form what could be the most potent partnership on the 2027 MotoGP grid. Yet, as history shows, the quest for a world title can turn the closest friendships into the fiercest rivalries.

For now, Bezzecchi insists his focus remains on the present. “I also want to focus on this season and try to get the most out of it,” he stated, especially as he recovers from a recent collarbone fracture sustained at the Sachsenring and aims for a comeback at Silverstone.

Aprilia is now poised to unite two of Italy’s brightest racing talents-and only time will tell if this friendship can withstand the relentless pressure of a MotoGP garage. As Bezzecchi himself conceded, rivalry has always defined their relationship, and that is one element that is certain to endure.
