The pair worked together in several films.
Actor Aruna Irani had collaborated with the late Manoj Kumar on many films, including Upkar (1967), Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974) and Patthar Ke Samaan (1967).
She offered condolences after his passing on Friday, and described him as a ‘mentor’. She also revealed that they were both hospitalised in Mumbai at around the same time, and that the veteran actor was very ill during his last days.
Speaking to ETimes, Aruna recalled debuting alongside him in Upkar, and described him as a ‘very skillful actor’. She said that he always behaved like the perfect gentleman, and added, “His wife (Shashi Goswami) was always nice to us, and we received special treatment from the two, and I worked in the majority of his films.” The actor mentioned the bond both of them shared while working, “He was a great person with a kind heart, and when you share that bond with someone, you don’t just remember the films you did together, but you remember all the memories you made while working with them.”
Aruna Irani reflected on the nature of life and recalled Manoj Kumar’s last days. She shared how both of them were admitted to the same hospital a couple of months ago. “When I fractured my leg, I was admitted to the same hospital as him, but I was unable to meet him because of my state. Fluids would fill up in his lungs, and he had to spend a few days in the hospital before he could come back,” she said.
Aruna prayed peace for Manoj, and she reminisced about her mentor and admitted that death is an inevitability that everyone must face. Since the news of Manoj Kumar’s demise came, tributes and prayers have been pouring in from all quarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Akshay Kumar, Ashoke Pandit, and Vivek Agnihotri are among those who’ve voiced their sadness and paid tribute to the great actor. Known for his patriotic roles, Manoj ‘Bharat’ Kumar left a formidable mark on the industry and has now left a vacuum in the hearts of all those who admired and loved him.
