Man sets bike on fire after being stopped from lighting cigarette at petrol pump | Video

New Delhi: Raipur police have arrested two men after a shocking incident at a petrol station in the city, where one of them allegedly set their motorcycle on fire using a lighter. The incident took place at a fuel outlet in the Urla area and was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the premises.

Incident caught on CCTV

According to police, the two men arrived at the Sangita Fuels petrol pump near Karma Chowk in Urla around 7:40 pm on February 18 to refuel their two-wheeler. As an employee began filling petrol into the tank, the pillion rider stepped off the motorcycle and attempted to light a cigarette with a lighter, while the rider remained seated on the vehicle.

CCTV footage later shared by the Police Commissionerate Raipur on X showed the man moving his hand holding the lighter towards the open fuel tank. Within seconds, flames erupted from the motorcycle. The act reportedly followed a warning from the fuel station staff asking him not to light the cigarette near the pump.

The footage also showed the accused himself catching fire briefly after the petrol pump worker swiftly pulled the fuel hose away and turned off the main fuel supply, preventing a larger blaze.

Swift action by staff and police

After the fire was brought under control, the two men allegedly attempted to flee the spot. However, petrol pump staff managed to detain them and alerted the police. Based on the CCTV evidence, the accused were identified as Dharmendra Singh, a resident of Birgaon in Urla, and Imran Quraishi from AHP Colony, NDTV reported.

Police later reached the scene and took both individuals into custody. Their motorcycle and the lighter used in the incident were seized as part of the investigation.

Case registered under arson charges

Urla police station inspector Rohit Mahelkar confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections pertaining to arson and endangering public safety. The investigation into the matter is currently underway.

Sharing the CCTV footage online, the Police Commissionerate Raipur wrote on X, “Whoever plays with law and order, will land in jail”.

Authorities have urged the public to strictly follow safety norms at fuel stations to prevent such dangerous incidents.
