New Mumbai Indians head coach Kieron Pollard emphasizes that strong man-management and individual player conversations will be central to his strategy for the five-time IPL champions.
Taking over from Mahela Jayawardene for IPL 2027, Pollard, who previously served as the team’s batting coach, faces the immediate task of finalizing player retentions before the mid-November deadline, with the auction scheduled for December 16 in Goa.
Pollard believes that while team talks and tactics are important, cricket ultimately relies on individual players performing their roles effectively. He stresses the value of informal, one-on-one discussions outside formal meetings, where he feels the most significant learning and development occur. He noted that the modern landscape, with social media and punditry, often distracts players from these crucial interactions.
With star players like Hardik Pandya, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah in the squad, Pollard’s goal is to alleviate pressure, allowing them to perform freely. He aims to help players overcome the ‘fear of failure’ by encouraging brave decisions rather than fostering regret. He believes understanding each individual is key to tackling this mental aspect.
Pollard, who joined MI in 2010, stated that the bulk of a head coach’s work happens before match day, focusing on preparation, tactical planning, and assigning roles. He highlighted non-negotiables for the team: hard work, discipline, mutual respect, and playing with passion for the MI badge, which he believes embodies the ‘One Family’ ethos instilled by the Ambani ownership. He anticipates setting a fun, relaxed tone, but acknowledges that poor results will be his biggest challenge.
