New Delhi: A 35-year-old man allegedly assaulted three doctors at Mumbai’s Cooper Hospital in the early hours of Saturday after his mother passed away during treatment. The accused, identified as Sameer Abdul Jabbar Shaikh, a resident of the SRA building in the Sagar City area of Andheri (West), has been booked by the Juhu police under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 12:10 am when Shaikh brought his 57-year-old mother, Saida to the Cooper Hospital after she complained of severe breathing difficulties. Upon arrival, she was immediately taken to the casualty department. Medical officer Dr Gaurav Anandgaonkar, 25 and Dr Prashant Bhadke began examining her. The doctor reportedly found that her blood pressure was non-recordable and her carotid pulse was weak.

Dr Anandgaonkar then alerted the medicine department and briefed Dr Karan Desai about her patient’s critical condition. The medical team initiated Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and monitored her heart activity through an ECG, which displayed a flatline. It indicated a cardiac arrest. The patient did not respond to treatment and was declared dead shortly thereafter.
On being informed of his mother’s death, Shaikh allegedly lost his temper and began verbally abusing and physically assaulting attending doctors. He shouted threats and accused the doctors of negligence and blamed them for his mother’s demise. It led the hospital security and police officers to intervene. They finally managed to restrain Shaikh and prevent further violence.
The doctors later approached the Juhu police to file a formal complaint. Based on their statement, an FIR was registered against Shaikh under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for assault, intimidation and obstruction of public servants on duty.
