From where to where did Mamata Banerjee’s rally take place?

Led by Mamata Banerjee, the march started from the statue of BR Ambedkar on Red Road and reached Sanko Thakurbari (home of Rabindranath Tagore). This 3.8 kilometer long march took place in the center of the entire city. TMC flags, slogans and posters of Save Democracy were seen all along the way. BJP described Mamta’s rally as completely politically motivated. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called it a ‘Jamaat rally’ and said that it is against the spirit of the Indian Constitution. BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya also took aim and said, ‘If Mamata ji has any complaint then she should go to the Supreme Court. There is complete anarchy in Bengal. Changes are being brought about in the population of the state. Mamata Banerjee is inviting Rohingyas to the state and wants to add them to the voter list.

What is SIR?

SIR (Special Intensive Revision) means on-ground verification of voter list. Meaning, who is alive, who has gone to another state or whose name is registered twice, all this is checked by the booth-level officer. The last time such revision took place about 20 years ago. Now it is being implemented again in 12 states and union territories, which also includes Bengal. But the opposition says that this time names are being removed from the voter list in a selective manner, especially of those communities which are inclined towards the opposition.

The matter has reached the Supreme Court

When its first phase ran in Bihar, more than 68 lakh names were removed from the voter list, after which the opposition approached the Supreme Court regarding this. The court refused to stop the SIR process for the time being, but allowed it to proceed with some changes.
